"Because our brain operates at about twice our rate of speech, it's important that we understand how to listen effectively in the work place. I'm Gloria Campbell with Advantage Training Systems located in St. Petersburg, Florida, giving you some ideas on how to listen effectively in the workplace. The thing to remember is that active listening requires that we put on some different things.....think about different things than we normally do. Listening is a two way activity. We listen with our ears, and then we speak with our mouths. So how do we make sure that we're actively listening to that other individual? Number one: stay engaged. Give them some feedback. Words like um hum....I see...also, if you aren't sure about something they've said, or you've kind of tuned out, ask questions. It's a great way to stay engaged. Also body language, sit up intently. Listen to what someone is saying, and make sure that you work at it, because listening effectively requires that you be actively involved. Summarize what you thought you heard that person say. Give them some feedback, and then also make sure that your body language is communicating that you hear what they say. I'm Gloria Campbell with Advantage Training Systems located in St. Petersburg, Florida. Listening effectively is the key to being effective in the workplace."
