"You've been asked to babysit your boss's kids for the weekend. You don't really think that's appropriate, but how do you refuse. I'm Gloria Campbell with Advantage Training Systems. We're located here in St. Petersburg Florida. How do you refuse to do an inappropriate task for your boss? Well, that's a kind of tricky one, because you always want to communicate your willingness to do whatever your boss is asking you to do, but you know that babysitting their kids, picking up his laundry are not things that you really feel are appropriate for your job. How do you communicate that without seeming like you are putting him in bad light? One of the things I would suggest you do is always indicate your willingness; "You know I would love to babysit your kids this weekend, unfortunately I have a family affair that I can't get out of or I've already made plans." Also, offer to do something else, so if you can't pick up the laundry maybe you could say "I tell you what I'll do. I'll stay this afternoon and watch the phones or cover this or that for you while you go pick up your laundry." Offer an alternative, give an explanation that you're willing to be part of the team and do some things, but this just isn't an appropriate time for you. Refusing to do an inappropriate task for your boss can be tricky, but I think there's a way to do it and still save face."
