"Hello, my name is Eric White, and today, we're going to talk about how to choose database software. You basically have two sides to database software. You have the server side, and the client side. The server side and client side work hand in hand. Things to consider when you're choosing database software, is how much data do you have to store? How quickly do you have to access your data? How much data are you going to export? How do you need to export it? It boils down to infrastructure, and cost, so if you have fifty thousand records, that probably wouldn't be a good idea to use a smaller end, like MySQL type database. You're probably really looking for a larger database like maybe Oracle, or FileNet. I don't know if any of you remember old FileNet, so how much data you have? How quickly do you need to be able to access it? The through put is extremely important. How much data crunching are you going to be doing? These are very important things to consider. Will the data be transferred across a network? Will it be a Fiber Network? Will it just be a hardware network? These are all things you have to consider, when you're trying to decide, what kind of a database server that you need. The other side of the equation is, how usable is the database by your end users? Are they accustomed to some of the idiosyncrasies that can happen with your different database server packages. Another thing to consider, is how long will this last? Are you going to outgrow a smaller database? and need to go to a bigger one. The cost involved in migrating the data, to the larger server, is a definite consideration, and those are the main points, in deciding what type of database software you want to use."
