OKay folks, in this clip I'm going to talk to you about how to make a horror movie. The thing that separates horror from the pack when it comes to all the different types of movies that are produced in Hollywood every year is it really strikes a cord with our fear and our personalities and our brains. It really does a number on that side of us. Now that's why people like horror movies, they like to be scared. So how do you make a good horror movie? First, you need a really scary story, and you want to try and do something that people haven't seen before because when it comes to horror, you know there are only so many ways to scare people. You can startle them, you can really creep them out, you can build up tension, but really there is only a few ways to scare. So you want to try and do it in an original way. So come up with a story that is unique, as unique as you can possibly make it. Next, you're going to write the script and make sure you have a good script. Like any feature film, you want to make sure the script is top notch before you move into the next phase which is bringing on your crew. Find a good group of people to work with you, hire all the different department heads, bring along a producer if you are not the producer. Find a creative team that can really bring this vision of yours to life. Get a good group of people working with you. That is incredibly important as well. Then you're going to want to hire the actors. Hiring people that are believable is incredibly important. Particularly in this genre, because if they come across at all as fake or cheesy, or ugh you're not going to end up with a good product. Make sure they can act. That is incredibly important, and along those lines, you're really going to want to invest in either an individual or someone who is going to create the evil force in your film. Whether it be a person or a monster, or whatever. You're going to want to make sure that is a top notch actor or creative team producing whatever this creature is going to become because your movie literally hangs on the success of this decision. If you make a bad decision and you, the evil does not come through, there's nothing to be scared of there, your movie will fall flat on its face. So make sure that your villain, your antagonist is top notch. You have to have a truly frightening villain to make a successful horror film. So once you have all these pieces in play, make a schedule, shoot the script, I'd do it as effectively and efficiently as possible, edit it together, and really feel the story as you put it together. Make sure that as you edit the scenes, that you build the scenes to create tension, to shock people, to scare people. Make sure that it's, it feels a little bit fun and not entirely gruesome. Unless you know, that is your artistic vision is just to really just disturb the crap out of people. A horror film ought to be frightening, and it ought to feel tense and you should have a little bit of fun with it as well. If you can add all those components and if you have a good group of people working with you, you have just made yourself a very successful, very well told horror film.
