We are planning now to put our railing on our stairs. It is 130 inches and you want to split that because you have got a 4 X 4 in the middle and you end up with 65 inches and you want to come an inch and three quarters off of that to one side because that is what a 4 X 4 is. Now you want to go up 38 inches off of the tread because that is what the deck is, the post so you measure up 38 and come down 40 inches. So you are going to cut your post sleeves and your 4 by's, 48 inches and put one here and put one here. You want to drill and put lag bolts, not just lags, well their carriage bolts and they have nuts on the back of them to tighten them up so they don't come out. We only need two posts, one in the middle and one on the bottom because we already have our two existing posts for our railing system in place so I'm just cutting these off at 48 inches and I'll take my 4 X 4, 48 inches and then I'll show you how to drill a hole. We are cutting the 4 X 4 tine to go inside the sleeves that are sitting over there that I'm going to bolt on to the stringers. The blade got a little dull but not bad.
