"Hi I'm Dr. David Hill and today we are going to talk about the history of Gerber baby foods. Now before 1927 you could not buy a manufactured baby food. That was the year that Daniel Frank Gerber, owner of the Freemont Canning Company saw his wife, Dorothy, laboriously make strained food to feed their daughter, Sally at his pediatrician's recommendation. He realized that he had the capacity to turn part of his canning operation toward manufacturing baby food and by 1928 with the help of the charcoal image of Ann Turner Cook who won the Gerber baby contest that year, he was shipping his products all over the United States. By 1960 it introduced glass jars which became a popular household item. He added to that a variety of other products including baby bottles, nipples, nursing products, vitamins, fluoridated water and a number of other baby products. Today Gerber sells over 190 products in 80 countries, labeled in 16 languages and they have 83% of the United States Market Share. In 2007 they were sold to the Nestle Corporation for 5.5 billion dollars and they have got to be the global leader in the manufacturing of baby foods and to think it all started with one pediatrician's recommendation. With the history of Gerber Baby foods, I'm Dr. David Hill."
