Summary: Land turtles should be taken outside on occasion because heat lamps can't simulate UV rays. Take care of land turtles by providing an area that simulates their natural habitat with tips from a reptile specialist in this free video on turtle care.
"Hi, I'm James Dix from Reptile Rescue Service in Salt Lake City, Utah. We're discussing how to take care of your land turtle, the best way of taking care of one. This is.....in different interpretations on this, some people, a land turtle is everything from a desert tortoise to a box turtle or a terrapin. It just depends, actually, a lot of times, on where it's from and who you're talking to, and what country their from. U.S. or out of the U.S., and such. Okay, well, the best care for, we'll use a box turtle for example, the best care for a box turtle is, when you have it in the house during the winter months and summer comes, it's good to get them outside, 'cause you cannot ever simulate the UV rays from the sunlight with heat lamps or anything like that perfectly. So when summers out, you can put 'em out in a little pen. We use cinder blocks, we bury 'em eight inches down in the ground so they can't dig out, and give 'em a....usually a five by twenty-five foot run. And this gives them an area where they can have shade. Very critical you have shade or a little habitat they can climb underneath to get out of the sun. But this is great for 'em. Eating the wild grasses, and letting 'em roam around and get their appetite stimulated so that they'll be good and healthy."
