"Hello, my name is Eric White, and today we're going to talk about how chat works. So it's two AM and you're white knuckled, pounding away at the keyboard to your friend in New Zealand and it occurs to you that you have no idea how this could possibly work, how am I talking to my friend in New Zealand? Well, it's actually quite simple. You have a chat server represented here by this black box here, and hey check out, it's the earth. And then here you are, check Client A, and here's your friend in New Zealand, check Client B. So you type a message, it gets sent to this chat server, and then gets relayed to chat client B which is your friend in New Zealand. Your friend in New Zealand says OMG, LOL, sends it back to you, hits the chat server, and then hits you. And that's it, that's all there is to it. Now there are a lot of different chat servers and some chat servers work together, but for the most part it's simply your client talks to the server, and the server talks to the target client that you're trying to talk to. That's all there is to it."
