Series Summary

Artistic drawings are drawings of any size or style penciled onto paper or canvas. A sketch is a freehand drawing that is not usually intended as a finished work. Historically, artists used a silver stylus on specialized paper called silverpoint to draw sketches. Artists can also use pen and ink or charcoal on regular paper to achieve the same look. Common tools used today for artistic drawings include graphite pencils, inked brushes, crayons, charcoals, pastels, markers or wax colored pencils. Sketchbooks are a popular medium for artistic drawing as well as different styles of paper. What the artist chooses to draw is ideally up to him or her. If you choose to draw a replication of something that is in front of you, such as a model, this is usually called a still life drawing. There are various other inspirations you can find for drawings including memories or imagination. In this series of expert videos, using techniques taught here, learn to draw a variety of things including people, Gothic symbols, ribbons and many other objects. Discover how to choose the paper and pencil that are applicable to the drawing, as well as the best medium to draw in, such as charcoal or chalk. After taking this step, learn to create circles and lines using a cylinder. Find information on shading and coloring in this series of expert videos. Watch a video demonstration of using a pencil to draw a cone. Additionally view a step-by-step demonstration of an artistic drawing of a cartoon teddy bear.

"Hi, welcome everybody, I'm Lars Eric Robinson. My company is Lars Arts. And today I thought we'll talk about how to use Chalko and pastel. And I started coping one of my masks that I have on my bigger piece here just to show you on the gray piece of paper how to pick out the highlights. So the basis to starting a Chalko piece is actually, you could take the wider piece and you can the paper as a medium. This is a metal gray and then I did a sketch here already which I used a water color wash. This is a light wash and you could actually take a little water and then just blend it out and it's very great for that. So, I'm taking my highlighter here, the white, and if you want a sharp edge you can actually, take one of these sharpeners which is like, and we'll sharpen the edge of this white, take it against the paper and you can get a sharp edge to your white. And I like being able to pop in my whites real quick so that I know where the light's hitting and where it's not. So I just want to do a quick demonstration so you could see how it works. Now I'm doing thinner lines like for example if we have some thinner lines. And that's by me sharpening it with sand paper pad that I have there. Now if you want to pop a few colors in there most of this piece is earth tone. So if you take the chalk, you could take that right on top. You notice that it's sharper on one edge and it's kind of faded out on the other. This side's sharper and this side's faded out. Once again we'll do that over here. One side is sharper, one side is faded out. That's one way to do it. If you want to get circles which we had his eye as the circles, you can actually lean your chalk this way and then turn it and turn it like that. One great thing about Chalko is that if you want to get lines it's not, you can actually create lines really boldly with it. And that's a really nice effect. And if you want to take the whole side, it fills in very fast, so you don't have to sit there like. They also have pencils to create the smaller detail. So, that gives you a little bit of an explanation on how to use it. I hope you just keep experimenting with Chalko and pastels. It's a really great medium. And when you're done you use a fixative. A workable fixative is usually what I prefer. Thank you guys so much for joining me and enjoy."
