"Firing employees is never an easy task, but there's a way that you can do it that makes you feel good and the employee. My name is Gloria Campbell. I'm with Advantage Training Systems in St. Petersburg, Florida. And I'd like to give you some ideas on how to fire an employee. The first thing you want to make sure that you do is that you are firing or you have taken this action as a last resort. Make sure that you counsel the employee, that you documented what they have not done that was a job requirement. Also make sure that what you are holding them responsible for is part of their job and not someone else's. The other thing that you want to do is you want to make sure that you validate the employee as an individual. It's not a reflection on them personally. Maybe it's something that is above their skill level, maybe it's they're not part of the team, they're not gelling with the team. I've found that it's usually extremely hard to fire someone if it was my selection, if I actually made the decision to hire that person because it means that maybe I didn't do something right. It happens. We're never going to have a hundred percent retention. But what we want to do is we want to make sure that that employee leaves and still feels good about themselves and that we feel good about the job we did as a manager or supervisor. My name is Gloria Campbell and I'm with Advantage Training Systems in St. Petersburg, Florida. Hiring an employee is never easy. Firing an employee is never easy. But doing it the right way makes everyone feel better."
