"My name is Christine Marquette and I'm a dietitian with the Austin Regional Clinic and I'm going to talk to you about how to deal with weight gain after gastric bypass surgery. A lot of people have found out that gastric bypass surgery is not exactly a miracle cure to obesity. It still requires hard work on the person who gets this surgery. You really have to make sure that you follow your eating plan that you are watching your portion size, taking any supplemental vitamin or Omega fats that were prescribed to you by your doctor, that you continue to drink enough fluids and actually perform exercise. If you aren't able to follow these recommendations, that small stomach pouch that you formed from your surgery can actually expand and it can expand all the way to the size of your original stomach. When this happens you do run that risk again of gaining a lot of weight or even getting back up to the weight that you had pre-surgery. The only way to handle this is with traditional methods of weight management and what that means is cutting back on portion size and doing a lot of physical activity, whether that is a formal exercise program or just doing things that you really enjoy, gardening, walking, cycling those types of things but you really do have to be very physically active, watch your portion sizes of all of your foods and make sure that you are drinking a lot of plain water, not so much fluids that have calories to them, things like regular soft drinks, even fruit juices. So in dealing with weight gain after gastric bypass surgery it really goes back to eating healthy and doing a lot of physical activity."
