on 4/11/2009 Mr. Todd is not a patent attorney. His video is nice, but contains errors. I am both an inventor and a registered US patent attorney.
1. Patents can be granted, after examination of a patent application, not registered. Trademarks are registered.
2. Only registered patent attorneys and agents have a duty of confidentiality to their clients, and are registered, not certified, to practice before the USPTO after passing an examination and/or service for a specified period as an examiner at the PTO.
3. Patent searchers have no such legal duty to the USPTO, nor are they regulated, certified, or registered by the USPTO.
4. Before making your invention public in anyway, an initial meeting with a patent attorney or agent can help you to make good legal and business decisions without compromising your patent rights in this or other countries. Some professionals will offer a free initial consultation. Best of luck to you!

Perhaps one of the first things you should do, if you are considering how to write a patent, is to visit the United States Patent and Trademark Office website, and look at it, navigate it, and see if you understand what terminology is being discussed, and what procedures are being discussed, and how you register and write a patent. If you're not comfortable, we strongly recommend that you consider hiring a patent attorney, a patent agent, or a patent searcher.
