"Across the world today, in every grocery store, and on almost every wine list, you'll find Merlot, because it has become one of the most popular wines across the world. But have you ever wondered what Merlot is made from? My name is Micah, and I'm going to talk to you about the Merlot grape and wine. Merlot is a red wine, made from grapes, obviously, but Merlot also denotes an actual grape, not just a kind of wine. In the 1800s, and Frenchman referred to a wine coming from a certain region as Merlot, which is a patois word, or slang, for young blackbird. The Merlot grape is a very early ripening grape known for its softness and fleshiness. It makes it ideal for blending, often with the later-ripening Cabernet grape, and also as a varietal. The Merlot grape carries hints of berry, currant, and plum. And it's also important to know that Merlot goes with red meats, pastas with red sauce, and various other dishes. You want to pair your Merlot properly so you can bring out the best flavor in your food and your wine. My name is Micah, and that's where Merlot comes from."
