How to Re-Caulk a Bathtub

When re-caulking a bathtub, remove old caulk first with a removal tool and then place a thin bead of caulk across the tub. Hi I'm Tim Gipson and I'm going to show you how to recaulk your tub. Now if the caulking along the edge here is in pretty bad shape you can get a caulking removal tool at your hardware store or local home improvement store and what this allows you to do is just scrape out the old caulking particularly if you have some areas like this where it is bumped up and it is not really smooth, as you can see it has just got a little edge on it so it allows us to very easily clear that old caulking out of there. So once we have done that and we clear it off and we have our caulking gun here now you load your caulking into your caulking gun and this is a really good type of caulking gun to have because it is a no drip caulking gun which means there is no pressure on it until you pull the handle. What you want to do is you want to squeeze out just a little bit to make sure it is ready to go and once you have done that then you are ready to go. Now the other thing that you want to have is you want to make sure that you have plenty of wet paper towels on hand. That will help you to clean this up. Now the other thing to take into consideration is when you are cutting your tip the smaller the opening the better. You want to be able to control how much caulking you want to put on there and you also want to cut this at about a 45 degree angle. Then what you want to do is you want to simply put this on in a thin bead across your tub. Now there are several things that you can do and in this case I've just got a standard switch plate so I could actually, and the switch plates are rounded so I can put it in the corner and actually use that and as you can see it gives me a nice clean line when I do that and then we just simply clean off the switch plate when we do that. You can take a putty knife or they actually make special tools that will allow you to do that. Usually when I do this I just simply use my finger and what you want to do is you want to take your wet paper towels and wet your finger and then just rub along the edge and that's all there is to it.
