Video Transcript

"Hi, this is Laura Turner. And today I'm going to talk to you about how to calculate your restaurant tip. Usually gratuity for a server at a restaurant is going to be about fifteen percent of your bill. So if we say today we have a thirty five dollar bill. First you're going to just enter that into your calculator, or onto your cell phone if you have a calculator on your cell phone. And you're going to multiply it by point one five. And what you'll come out with is five dollars and twenty five cents for the exact fifteen percent of your thirty five dollar bill. Another good way to think about tipping in a restaurant is assessing your tip based on not just the fifteen percent factor, but also did you have a good service factor. Were your drinks refilled on time? Did your food come out on time? Was the food good or was the food bad? And was that the server's fault or was that somebody in the kitchen's fault? So you don't, for example, want to give a server a bad tip just because the food was bad. Because it's really not the server who is cooking the food. But so, if the server has compensated for your food being bad by being a great server, then go ahead and give him, you know, twenty percent of your bill. And that's just some tips for calculating a tip."
