"Hi, my name is Rachel, and I'm the owner of austinstylewatch.com street fashion site, and I'm a freelance fashion reporter, and today we're here to talk about girl's best friend, the diamond, and what exactly a carat means for diamonds. So, first lesson, carat means weight. It talks about how big, how heavy the diamond is. That's unlike for gold where carat means what percentage of the ring is actually gold. It talks about how much real gold, as opposed to alloy, so this means mix, this means weight. Naturally, the bigger the diamond, the heavier, the more valuable it's going to be, and that's why a lot of times you'll see a ring that maybe has several medium size diamonds that are of a fair carat, but only medium size; whereas, you'll see a ring with one giant diamond. The ring with the one giant diamond is actually going to be worth more than a ring with three smaller diamonds, and that's because bigger diamonds are rarer, so large diamond worth more; smaller diamonds not so much. Very tiny diamonds like these you're going to see right here are often measured in just point size, rather than carats because they're so small. Carat is one fifth of a gram, and points are so tiny they don't assign them a specific size like carat, so you find rings a lot with lots of points on it, and you'll hear jewelers measure things out that way. So, carat means weight. Now you know."
