Summary: Creating an Excel formula in Microsoft Office is a great way to perform mathematical calculations based on data that's already been entered or through other cells within the workbook. "Hi, my name is Dave Andrews. Today I'm going to show you how to create an Excel formula. Let's open up Excel by clicking on the Start button. Let's go to "All Programs", "Microsoft Office" let's just open up Excel. Now a formula in Excel will do mathematical calculations either on data that you type in or on other cells within the workbook. To create a formula, click on the cell where you want your formula answer to appear, type the equals key to being the formula. Now you can put some kind of mathematical text in here, I'm just going to do something simple like 100 times 100 and I use the asterisk for times. There's my answer to that. I can do also 1 plus 1. There's my answer. Now if I want to do something a little more complex like summing up a range, let's just type some numbers here and we want to find what the sum of these are. I can easily tell just by highlighting them, Excel will tell me down here at the bottom the sum. But I want to put that in the cell here. And the way you do that, you say the equals, type the word "sum" and then create a parenthesis, an open parenthesis. Now after you type your open parenthesis, click on the first value with your mouse and highlight all the others by dragging down over them. Let off your mouse and then type a closed parenthesis. Now press the "enter" key and there's your answer to the sum. If I click in it, my formula's still up here at the top but its showing my answer here. This is dynamic which means that as these numbers change, so too does your sum. Its that easy to create a formula in Excel. My name is Dave Andrews and I've just told you how to create an Excel formula."
