"Hi, I'm Patti German and I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist here in New York City. In this clip, we're going to talk about how to deal with a controlling parent. I think the most important thing with a controlling parent is to understand that you can control them as well and that this is the way your parent has always been but part of what's it about as an individual is to learn to separate from that parent so you can develop more of who you are without being angry and wishing that your parent can change. I think the important thing is that you understand that you need to change so that when you feel your parent controlling you, you're able to take care of yourself in the moment and individuate and differentiate to become more of who you are as a separate person who's able to rely on your own feelings and your own behaviors and have what's called a lot of self confidence in not having to need the approval of your parent. This is Patti German in New York City."
