"Hi my name is Stacie Royer and I'm a career specialist from Austin, Texas. I'm going to talk to you today about becoming a drug and alcohol counselor. The first thing that you'll need to do is check out your states web site for the requirements that they have mandated. Secondly, you'll need to receive all of the necessary certification that's listed on that web site. Some of those are equivalent to Associates Degree without receiving the degree itself. But you'll also definitely need to go to a university to receive your undergraduate degree in something like psychology or counseling and then continue your education with a masters degree and also psychology or counseling. And then you'll go from there to take your state exams and once you pass that then you'll need to fulfill the necessary hours, clinical hours that the state has mandated that you take. Sometimes that can take a few years, but it's definitely worth it in the end."
