"Hi I'm Laura from youngwritersworkshops.com and I wanted to talk a little bit about how to play learning games with your child. I thought I would just give a couple of examples of some games that can be fun to play but also really encourage your child's critical thinking skills and also some writing mechanics. One of the games that we really like to play is called silence is golden and in this game you write a question and the other person writes the answer and you continue and you keep up the conversation and no talking is allowed. So it is nothing more really than writing notes to each other but in a way it becomes a game by saying that no one can talk and no one can make any noise and so at the end you have a little conversation written and it is a simple game but one that encourages your child to form a conversation in writing and also work on spelling and legibility and it can be a lot of fun to play. Another game that we like to play is called can you top that and it is a really simple game as well. It starts out with someone making a claim like I'm so tall I can touch the sky and the next person has to top the claim by making an even loftier example such as I'm so tall I can touch the moon so it starts out with a small enough claim that it can be topped but it ends when one person feels that they cannot top the next person. You can do this with just about any kind of thing like I'm so strong, I'm so magical. These things can continue until one person decides that they can't top the next one. This game really encourages your child to think logically, like they have to figure out a way to top that by adding something even more lofty and a more powerful statement. Those are just a couple of learning games that you can play with your child at home."
