Series Summary

Computers are complex machines built upon very simple principles. They perform arithmetical operations millions of times over to transform digital information moving at lightning speed into usable human data. A personal computer's job is to help a user create, manipulate, deliver, receive or delete media content. This is a simple, sterile definition that sounds uninteresting on the surface. Nevertheless, these fundamental functions mimic human ability in some surprising ways. Therefore, the computer is increasingly becoming an engine of the imagination, a platform for the digital life. Computer technology changes faster than people change socks. A computer is an investment that will keep running smoothly with proper maintenance. In this free video series, learn about computer software applications and maintenance that will keep a computer running fast. Learn about adding RAM to a computer, removing clutter from the computer hard drive, exporting Windows registry files and formatting a hard drive in Linux. Find out about different applications in computer software programs like Microsoft Word, Access and Outlook. Discover how to tar a directory and a file in UNIX, use DOSBox and make a computer start up and run faster.

on 5/3/2009 Dave, I have a Gigabyte MA-790 board, with 4 slots on the board for RAM.The thing is I was running 2 OCZ 6400 800 MHZ chips at 2GB per chip and I added another set identical to the first. The question is: Why does my PC not show the new RAM in the properties section and in dxdiag as existing, it says I still have 3.55GB RAM? What can I do?

"Hi, my name is Dave Andrews. Today I'm going to show you, how to upgrade your computers RAM. It's extremely easy to add RAM to your computer, I have a chip right here. When you add memory to your computer, you allow more programs to run at once, and your computer doesn't have to manage memory as much as it would had before, because it has more of it to deal with. So lets get into the computer, kind of clear out a little bit of area, so that you can see these RAM slots that are in the very middle, right here. As you can see, I have four slots available on this particular computer. What I'm going to do, is, take this stick of RAM, which will only go in one way, and I'm going to put it in there. Since the existing stick is in this white bracket, I'm going to put this one in the white bracket as well on the other side. It will only fit in one direction, do not put too much force on it, until you know that you got it in the slot. So now that I have it where it should be, and there's a little notch here that shows you where you should be, stick it inside of its slot, just press down on both sides, you hear a little snap, that's okay, and it just pops into place. It's that easy to upgrade the RAM on your PC. My name is Dave Andrews, and I've just showed you how to upgrade the RAM on your PC."
