    "Congress Avenue located in downtown Austin, Texas, has been Austin's main street since 1839 when the city was designed and laid out by Edwin Waller. It's been the center of commerce and culture for both city and state. Congress Avenue continues to play host to parades, protests, rallies and Presidential visits. Congress Avenue runs north to south and is known as gateway to the Capitol and gateway to the city. North of the Capitol, a small section of Congress Avenue continues to MLK Boulevard and the University of Texas campus. In 1979 in recognition of its historical and architectural significance, the section of Congress Avenue from First Street which is now Caesar Chavez, to the Capitol was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Congress Avenue has numerous landmark buildings, statues. skyscrapers and architectural treasures lining both sides of the street. Also to be found on Congress are numerous museums, galleries, and gift shops. Congress Avenue continues to be home to live music venues, numerous merchants, eclectic shops and eateries."
