So have you been told that you need a dental implant and you are just not sure on what to expect? My name is Michelle and I'm a dental assistant with Solutionz and I'm here to explain to you on what you should expect during an implant procedure. I have a model here and it actually shows you what an implant looks like when it is below your gum. It is pretty easy, basically a dental implant is a titanium post. Actually some implants they look like screws like this one and then what the dentist would do is if you have to have a tooth extracted he will go ahead and extract your tooth and then once the tooth is extracted it leaves what we call your socket. He then places the implant in the socket and depending on what type of implant it is sometimes he might need to screw it in which is actually just like screwing a screw into a wall. He would turn it and screw it in with a specific instrument and then he'll actually place what we call cadaver bone and it is dead bone that we put in there to fill in the spaces so therefore it is actually forcing your body to adhere to the implant and then the implant sits in there for about four to six months for healing time and then you go back to your dentist for final restoration which you would need then to have a crown put on top of the implant but mainly what you should expect is of course you are going to be numb in the area so you won't really feel any major discomfort but you are going to feel pressure and then you might also hear some sounds and you might feel like the implant is being screwed all the way into the top of your head but don't worry it's not but definitely you are going to feel pressure and then you are also going to hear maybe like some little cracking sounds but nothing to worry about. Your dentist will walk you through the whole procedure to kind of put you at ease with it but getting a dental implant is pretty easy.
