"Hi. I'm Michael Perkins a curator here at the Orange County Regional History Center. One of the most compelling exhibitions we have at the center is entitled "How Distant Seems Our Starting Place." It's the history of the African American community right here in central Florida. It's a compelling story beginning of course with slavery and even in the times before that. Through segregation, The Jim Crow Laws, violence to some final great success and victories as small towns were founded and of course we came together in the nineteen eighties and nineties. It's a wonderful story. We interviewed a variety of African American folks in the community to really personalize it. We have a lot of artifacts and images that tell a really evocative story about the struggles and triumphs of the African American community right here in central Florida. It's a great story. You won't find it anywhere else in the Orlando area. We're very proud of this exhibition and we hope you come and visit us right here at the Regional History Center."
