"Hi, I'm Athena Reich and I'm an actress singer song writer, and performing arts coach here in New York City. In this clip I'm going to talk about how to learn simple jazz improvisation. It depends on what instrument you're playing. If you're a piano player there; nothing gets better then this book. This is loved and revered by jazz pianist everywhere. This is by Mark Levine; it's the jazz piano book. It's starts from zero and it goes to 100, from chords to improvising lines to everything. If you're a piano player this is what you got to get. If you're a singer you're going to want to think about, you want to practice your scales. If you're a singer or a sax player or any kind of melodic instrument that does one line, one note as opposed to a guitarist or a pianist who does cords. You're going to think about, you're going to think about the scales. You're going to want to learn your blues scale. You want to, want to learn your modes, all of your modes, your Dorian, your mixolydian, your Lydian, your Phyrgian. All of those modes you're going to want to learn them and, and you're going to want to learn how to improvise them. Bum ba dum bum bum da dum ba dum ba ba ba ba scooby doop be doo boo boo boo botta ba be to do doom. You're just going to want to learn those scales. Play them, shed them. Shedding is called practicing, practicing, practicing. You want to shed them, practice them and then you basically learn how to become a jazz improviser. This has been Athena Reich on how to learn how to improvise jazz."
