"Hi I'm James with JNC Home Repair. Today I'm going to show you how to measure a counter top. Basically the only thing you are going to need for this is a tape measure. If you are planning on redoing your counter tops and you are going to go back in and you are keeping your cabinets you want to make sure that you get something that is exactly the same size as what you have got so you have got the same over hang on the edges and something that is basically going to fit in there the same way your old one was. If you are going with some new cabinets then you want to know that the actual dimensions of the new cabinets before you order your new counter tops. You might get something that doesn't fit right, the sink hole may not be in the right spot. There is a couple of things to consider before you might go to replacing your counter tops. Basically what we are going to do today is we are going to show you how to measure them. Basically what you want to do is you want to look at it and see if basically it is one solid piece or if it is two individual pieces. What we have got here is one long solid piece that is going to cover up three different cabinets. All you do is you are going to measure the width of it and then you are going to measure the length of it and most of them won't come the exact size, most of them will have to be trimmed or cut to the exact size but at least you can get a general idea of how to measure them and at least how much materials you are going to need to actually replace it."
