How to Become a Basketball Coach

"Coach Rudy, I've won championships both as a coach and as a player and I want to talk a little bit about how I became a coach or how you can become a coach. The most important thing a coach has to have is passion for the game. An understanding of the principles of the game is also pretty vital but you are never going to push yourself to learn all that stuff unless you have a passion for the game. Whether you have played it or not really is immaterial. You are going to have to read, you are going to have to watch a lot of film and you are going to have to sit with and be coached by other coaches. Even the greatest coaches whether it is college or basketball all have coaches. They all have people that they turn to when they are challenged to get direction and solutions from. So reading is important, studying is important but you have got to go to games. Get yourself a favorite team whether it is a high school team or a college team or a pro team. You have got to go to games. You have to see the X's and O's actually executed out on the floor in order to understand any of the philosophy of the game. You also have to get yourself familiar with the language, the terminology the funicular of basketball."
