"I'm Katie Adams, a registered dietician with the Decathlon club, part of Western Athletic Clubs. To reduce cholesterol in your diet, it's important to avoid high-fat foods, such as red meat and high-fat, full-fat dairy products. Cholesterol is made in the liver, so any living thing that has a liver will produce cholesterol. Our bodies can actually make all the cholesterol that we need, so that's why it's really important to limit the amount of cholesterol you get from your diet. Egg yolks also contain cholesterol, so although egg is an excellent source of protein, you want to make sure that it's not your only source of protein. All meat and dairy products contain cholesterol, but those that are leaner and lower in fat will naturally have less cholesterol, so it's important to make them the primary sources of protein in your diet. Whole grains, such as brown rice, whole grain cereals, whole grain bread, et cetera, are also really good sources for reducing your cholesterol. They act like a broom going through your body and cleaning out stores of fat that you may have. Lastly, exercise is very important for reducing your cholesterol levels. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity on most days, and that's anything that gets your heart rate increased and your blood pumping. That will help clear cholesterol from your body. I'm Katie Adams, a registered dietician with Decathlon Club, a part of Western Athletic Clubs, and that's how you can reduce your cholesterol levels."
