"I'm Katie Adams, a registered dietitian with Decathlon Club a part of Western Athletic Clubs. To assess yourself prior to beginning a weight loss program, it is important to determine your current state of health. If you have a medical problem such as heart disease, asthma or diabetes, it is important to conduct your weight loss plan under the supervision of a medical professional. The first thing you want to do is to determine how much weight you want to lose. Determine if that is a realistic amount of weight based on the time you have to put into your weight loss plan and if it is a sustainable goal for your health. Remember that changes start slowly and you also want to make sure that it is a healthy goal for yourself. Start by increasing your exercise by 5 to 10 minutes per session per week. This might be an extra lap around the block or an extra trip up and down the stairs. And start by having one or two nutrition goals. Your first goal might be to have three servings of dairy a day. Your second goal might be something like making sure you eat every three to four hours. Remember, changes don't happen overnight. You'll be more likely to stick with your weight loss plan if you ease into it. I'm Katie Adams, a registered dietitian with Decathlon Club a part of Western Athletic Clubs. And that is how you assess yourself prior to beginning a weight loss plan."
