"I'm Katie Adams, a registered dietitian with Decathlon Club part of Western Athletic Clubs and we're going to talk about how to better absorb zinc. Zinc is a mineral that is found in almost all cells of the body. It aids in wound healing as well as supporting a healthy immune system. Red meat and poultry provide most of the zinc found in American diets. Seafood, whole grains, fortified breakfast cereals and dairy products also contain zinc. Zinc is best absorbed when it comes from animal sources. A component of whole grain cereals, breads and legumes called phytates can impinge zinc absorption so when possible, it is best to consume zinc in the form of animal products. Zinc has also been said to prevent the common cold. There is some evidence to support that increased intake of zinc may help one heal faster, however it is not recommended to take a mass amount of zinc, either in pill form or in lozenge form.
