"Hi I'm Ty Brown with dogbehavioronline.com. We're here in Riverton, Utah today to teach you how to train a dog. The topic of today's discussion is how to train your dog to fetch a newspaper. Now before you can teach your dog how to fetch a newspaper you have to teach your dog how to fetch first. Now a lot of dogs have a natural desire to fetch and if your dog does this is something that you can teach him and so for a dog that has a natural desire to fetch start out with something simple like a tennis ball. Get your dog's interest in a tennis ball by waving it back and forth and really getting him excited and animated about the tennis ball. Once he's excited throw the ball, have him get it and then with a long line reel it right back in like a fish. So Rock, what's that, what's that, what's that, what's that, what's that, fetch, good boy. Once he gets it reel him back in, good boy, and bring it to you, good boy, what's that, fetch, good boy, bring him right back in, bring him over, good boy, good boy. And do this over and over and over. Once a dog understands the concept of how to fetch then you can have him start fetch different objects. At that point you can start having him fetch the newspaper. When he is really good at that then you can take him out in the morning, having him a couple feet away and tell him to fetch. Every week move back another step and after a couple, after several weeks you should be able to open up your front doorstep, tell your dog to fetch, if he brings back the newspaper you give him a lot of praise for doing that and in doing so you can train your dog how to fetch the newspaper."
