"I'm Bill Elzey with Showplace Lawns. Lets talk a few minutes about how to control out of control weeds. First let me tell you this, if you have out of control weeds, you have a serious problem. First and foremost, weeds are an indication of poor soil quality, and the lack of good grass coverage and healthy grass. So, you not only have those issues to deal with, but you have to get rid of the weeds themselves. The best way to approach any gardening and long task, is to do it a natural organic safe way. So the first thing you can do with these out of control weeds, is what I call apply the Santa Claus method, and that is, hoe hoe and hoe. The other way is to get a weed puller, make sure you get the root and pull that weed all the way up. If you don't get the roots in any weed, it will come back. Another way to take care of out of control weeds, is to keep them from coming up to begin with. Again, a nice fertile healthy soil, and use a weed pre- emergent in the fall, in the winter, and early spring. A weed pre-emergent will keep them from coming up, and then you don't have to deal with them. The best weed pre-emergent to use in that case is corn gluten meal. Corn gluten meal is a bi-product of the milling of corn meal. It's actually a live stock feed, but it works really good as a weed control."
