How to Apply a Smooth Coat to Drywall

"Hi, I'm James with JNC Home Repair. Today I'm going to show you how to apply a smooth or a skim coat to drywall. What we've got here today is a seam that we've already applied joint tape to. We've got the first float on it, it's what it's technically called, the first float. That's the step where you go ahead and apply your first coat of drywall joint compound and you apply your tape. Now this joint is set up and dried and the next thing you're going to do is you're going to come in and you're going to see that we've only got about four inches of mud on this seam. Now the next step is to go in with just a little bit bigger mud knife. Now this is an eight inch knife, and then they also have ten inch knives and twelve inch knives. And the step is, is what you want to do is after you've gotten your first float on there, you want to come in with the next bigger size mud knife and you want to apply another coat of mud over the drywall. And it's all it's going to do is feather the mud out just a little bit farther for a stronger joint and a more even transition. So, after the wall's been textured and painted, you won't be able to see it, OKay?"
