"Hi I'm James with JNC Home Repair. Today I'm going to show you how to troubleshoot exterior paint problems. First thing you want to do, as far as troubleshooting exterior paint problems, is walk around your house and take a look at what you got. I've got a perfect display here of some common exterior paint problems here. First of all, if you see any kind of caulk or paint flaking or any kind of stuff like this that's just hanging off, that's a problem okay? If you see any of this kind of paint that's just like loosely hanging there it's not really stuck to anything, it's just there, that's a problem. Because all it's going to do is once it starts doing that it's just going to keep on and on and on. The more you flake it off, the more you try to peel it off, the more it's just going to keep doing it okay? And if your house has already gotten to the point where the paint is peeling off like this it's going to involve a lot of prep and it's going to involve a lot of work to get it back to it's natural state. To a nice condition okay? This stuff right here, all this old caulk and all this old paint and peeling stuff, all that stuff has got to come off. The best thing you can do is you can go through and you can power-wash your house that will take off a lot of it. You'll have to put it on a real high-pressure spray to actually get some of this stuff off. But even like these older homes like this, even that won't get it all the way off. You'll actually have to get a scraper and a wire brush and you'll actually have to start peeling all this stuff off. Scraping it off and actually getting all this old stuff off and you want to kind of get it down smooth. So actually after you prime your house again, and you paint it again, this won't happen again. It will all stick to the wood. The problem is this thing probably been painted without being cleaned first and what it does is it leaves a bunch of little bumps and places for the paint to actually peel. So if you're running in to this, this is the basic way to troubleshoot your exterior paint problems."
