"Coach Rudy, Big Ten Alumni. Let's talk about how to choose a football. Sound simple? It's really a little bit more difficult. For the young guys that are playing pee-wee or Pop Warner, that kind of thing, the size of the football is determined by the league. More specifically, the age and the weight of the kid. Contact the league, and find out which size football you should be using. For high school kids, all the high school footballs are all exactly alike. For the college kids, all the college footballs are exactly alike. Now, depending on your position, if you're a center, right, you want to become familiar with the laces, because that is your whole world. Same thing as a quarterback. The width of the football is specific to the age that you're playing. Again, little league, Pop Warner, has a specific width and length. High school has a specific width and length, college has a specific width and length. The only personal choice that I would say when it comes into choosing a football, in terms of name brand, is when you go to the store, you touch and feel five or six of them, in the specific category that your age dictates, and you find the one that feels good in your hands. If you play receiver, quarterback, running back, defensive back, you get a ball, and you keep it with you. You take it to bed, you sleep with it, you carry it to school, you do your homework with it in your sight. You have your football with you at all times."
