Coach Rudy, Big 10 alumni. Let's talk about special situations. Third and long, fourth and long. You've got the lead at the end of the game or the end of the half, and you want to prevent the big play. Putting in a three-three or a nickel package is a very good idea. Now, here are the keys. Getting pressure from the three defensive linemen is a very big deal. You can put them wherever you want. You can rush them up the middle, have two of them come wide--as long as the nose guard, or your center guy, is making some kind of move to create some kind of chaos in the middle. You've got your three linebackers checking for run first, and then they're dropping out into pass coverage. You're got your corners going deep. You've got two safeties on either side going deep. And you've got a free safety roaming the whole entire field, looking to make the play--either knock the ball down, intercept the ball, hold onto it, run out of time, all of that. Nobody ever gets deeper than a free safety. In a nickel package, your back three defensive backs should be very cognizant of where the receivers are, and not allow them to make a play on the football. Nickel package; put it in.
