"Yarn-overs are a way of adding a decorative element to your knitting, and it's also used a lot in lace. A yarn-over simply put, is yarn over, just goes right over the needle, and you leave it there, and you would continue on. Now most often because the yarn-over creates a stitch, it's often followed by decreasing two stitches, and it will create a decorative element. So you do a yarn-over, (if you were in England, it would be, yarn round, I believe, Y-R-N, verses yarn-over, which is the way we say it here) and you would go across, so you've got these spaces, and you would go across doing a yarn-over, knit 2 together, so you're adding a stitch with your yarn-over, just goes across the needle as simply as that, knit 2 together. And you would continue this way across the needle, or however your pattern stitch asked you to do it, it might combine some other things. And then when you go back to the other side, unless otherwise indicated, you would just work it the way it would be. So, now, that was a knit side, so if we did a purl, you would just purl those stitches as they come to you. And you'll see that this creates a little bit of a hole, which was done un-purpose, and it can create like a little eyelet in your patterns."
