"It's a lot more fun to learn by doing then to just by practicing swatches so for your first project you could knit a wash cloth or what's more common is to make a scarf. You can make a sweater, it just depends how motivated you are. But when you're picking the yarn for your scarf you want to consider a few things. You want to pick the right type of yarn, a yarn that's going to make it fun, makes you excited, you like the colors the texture. But not a yarn that's going to makes you crazy and has all kinds of things, novelty things flying off of it. So for example you would want a yarn that is smooth, it could be a color but see how this is smooth verses a yarn like this which is textured, that makes it harder to knit. When your a new knitter; even sometimes an experienced knitter yarn that has extra fiber on it makes it harder or yarn like that has more texture to it, these things can be harder for a beginner to learn with. Or yarn like this that's Mohair that's just hard to see and it's hard to grasp for a lot of people. I like to start people off with a basic chunky weight yarn and by chunky that's 3 and a half stitches to the inch, a light color so that they can see their stitches and the bamboo needle so that the yarn doesn't slip off of the needle."
