"Regular knit stitches formed by inserting your needle form front to back into the stitch. If you knit through the back loop, you'll twist your stitches and by twisting your stitches you'll get a little bit of a detail in your pattern and it will also create a less elastic quality. So if you're knitting something slippery this will be a great pattern device to use to keep it from slipping. So you can see I'm going into the back loop of my knitting and it's twisting my knitting stitches shut. You can see that on this row here I was knitting the normal fashion, and here I've done a back loop, knit through the back loop and twisted it. And then you would purl back as you do normally, but there you have that twist and it can keep things from stretching out of shape."
