For thousands of years agriculture and farming have been not only a staple of human life but a necessity. Providing vast amounts and varieties of fruits and vegetables along with herbs, spices and countless other products derived from them, crop plants have turned desolate unlivable areas into thriving, lush economies where some people live solely off their land and the food they grow. Cultivation of crops has also improved over the centuries as people have discovered and developed new and more efficient ways to grow larger crops that yield more food. Farming and an agriculture life is a difficult one but very rewarding. Farmers for years have felt the benefits and rewards of eating what they grow with their own two hands. Some crop fields are massive and involve many square acres of land. A good alternative to this is a simple spring garden in which anything from raspberries to asparagus can grow and produce food. Watch an experienced farmer as he walks through all the facets of farming in a spring garden and addresses fertilizing, bees, controlling pests and much more. Take these lessons and go grow your own food!
"We're back at Laughing Dog farm and we're looking and spring clean up. So in the spring we're faced with a myriad of tasks. We need to get out into the garden, access the winter damage, access the kinds of beds that might be available for early planting. And then basically review the whole garden. Today we're going to be building new beds, installing fences, trellises and retaining walls. And we're also going to be repairing damage soil by adding compost, mulch and other organic amendments in order to get us ready for our spring planting. You can see behind me that it looks like we're well under way with the season but in fact there's plenty to be done. At this point between compost building and bed repair, and spring planting we've got our plate full."
