"The word Poi, which is spelled P O I, originated with the Maori people of New Zealand and Polynesia. This word refers to the Tarot root. And also a food made from the Tarot root, which was a staple food of these people. One of the theories of how Poi spinning developed was that in order to make the dish Poi, which is a mashed up dish of Tarot root. Women would cut the Tarot into pieces, tie it into a ball with a cloth. Sort of like this. And then they would attach it onto a string or a rope and beat it against a rock or some hard surface in order to mash up the Tarot root and make it into a soft dish. The actual word Poi also means ball on a string. And it was from this type of motion that eventually a whole arrhythmic dance form evolved. Today people are using Poi in all kinds of new and innovative ways, that were probably not done by the original Maori people of Polynesia. It is evolving into a whole beautiful art form that can be done with fire, with lights, with ribbons trailing from Poi, and lots of other ways."
