on 11/30/2008 I very much appreciated the tip of "touching" the spoon to the baby's cheek to encourage mouth opening. It worked like a charm with my daughter.

"Are you getting ready to feed your infant? If so, you must be pretty excited. Hi, my name is Erin Sheppard with Austin Baby, and I'm going to talk about how to feed your baby with a spoon. The first thing you want to check when feeding your baby with a spoon is, if your baby is ready. Your first point of reference could be your health care provider. And some of the signs of readiness is, that the baby is sitting upright, has good head and neck control, and that the baby is showing greater interest in what everybody else in the family is eating, and an interest specifically in the food. And also if the babies appetite has increased. The first thing that you want to do when actually getting ready to feed, is choose a starter food, again, that's another good question for your health care provider. Now we'll need to prepare the environment. We need to have ready some type of liquid, and most likely that will be water in this case, because we are adding the solid, we will need to keep the baby hydrated. Another thing to prepare the environment is, getting ready for messes. This is a whole new stage of life with baby, and it's a very fun one, but it can be a very messy one. Now that you're ready to start, you want to use very tiny amounts, so just a tiny amount at the tip, lean it towards the tip of the spoon, and wait until baby's mouth is open. Once they know that the food is coming, and you might have to touch their cheek, which will stimulate that reflex, the rooting reflex. And when you do that, their mouth should open, and you'll put it straight into their mouth, but at the top, you don't want to go straight back, just go straight and up to the top of the mouth. Another thing that you want to make sure during the eating process, is that baby is very safely positioned. If you are using a chair, you want to make sure that baby is capable of sitting in it comfortably and safely, so baby should be snuggly attached. And your health care provider is a great person to talk with about baby's first eating experiences. And there are many, many, many books to really stimulate all areas of eating with baby; about the nutritions, which foods to use, how to prepare them. So it's a world of information out there. Hope you enjoy feeding your infant for the first time and the many times afterwards. I'm Erin Sheppard with Austin Baby."
