"Hi this is Les Whitley. I'd like to take a few minutes to talk to you about the oblique crunch or crunches that engage the sides of the torso. The oblique crunch is responsible or the obliques themselves are responsible for rotation or lateral stability of the body. The oblique crunch beginning just as a regular crunch with you on the floor, arms either across your chest or slightly behind your head with fingertips only touching not to pull, but just for additional support for the head. The oblique crunch should involve you rotating the torso just slightly to engage the musculature of the obliques through that range of motion. Ideally alternating from one side to the other with the rotation of the shoulders. Pointing one shoulder towards the opposite knee will put you in a good position to allow those obliques to contract and relax through a full range of motion. Controlling the torso providing lateral stability as well as rotational stability through a full range of motion. Adding the oblique crunch to a regular abdominal training routine will complete the overall aspect of your core. With lower back the middle section of the abdominals and rotational or lateral forces being applied to develop a good nice strong toned abdominal and midsection."
