"Hi. I'm Les Whitley. I'd like to take a few moments right now and show you how to do a proper crunch. Begin by lying on the floor. Ideally knees should be at a nice bent position to allow you the ability to flatten out your lower back and help tilt up your pelvis. This is going to help maximize the contraction of the abdominal muscles. Begin either by placing your hands behind your head, fingertips barely touching the skull, not so much to pull, but just for a little additional support for the head, or arms across the chest. Whichever feels more comfortable. As you move your upper torso closer towards your lower body, keep a couple of things in mind. It is a movement that's straight ahead and forward, so there should be minimal rotation side to side. The crunch we're focusing on the center portion of the abdominal muscles. The other thing too, there should, maintain about a fist distance between your chin and your chest so as to minimize the impact and stress that's placed on the neck. You should never pull from the neck to move the head in. The goal here is to move at the torso, crunching the abdominals and upper body forward. By maintaining that space, you allow your head and neck to relax and focus on the abdominals. The crunch should begin again by moving your shoulders off the ground, crunching them forward towards your knees as you move up, full contraction of the abdominals, hold for a slight half count, then back down, ideally not letting the shoulders rest on the ground to maintain good contraction through the abdominal muscles. Again, crunching up and down under good control allowing those muscles to contract fully through a full range of motion to complete the abdominal crunch."
