"Getting a golf ball to check up on a green is very difficult, but is often necessary part of the golf game. My name is Jared Garbett, and I'm with Echo Farms Country Club, and I'm going to teach you how to get a ball to check up. Whenever you hit a ball to check up on the green, you're going to want to carry it almost all the way to the flag. But putting spin on the ball, it'll stop within a couple feet of the hole. I'm going to take a couple practice swings; making sure that I catch plenty of ground so that the ball has plenty of time to spin up the club face, and land next to the hole and check up. Taking my practice swings, I want to look and visualize where I want the ball to land. I want it to land about four feet from the hole, check up, and roll to a stop. That ball checked up pretty nicely, and it rolled out to within a foot of the hole. That's how you get a ball to check up while on the green."
