"Prevention of Mesothelioma really means minimizing risk factors, with lung cancer, you can minimize it tremendously by smoking cessation strategies. Well, Mesothelioma, given that the major risk factor is asbestos exposure, asbestos control in the work place and elsewhere is critical. OSHA started this in 1970s by limiting the exposure that one can have in the work place, and has continued this. Other risk factors are radiation to the chest, all of that's also uncommon, so we try to minimize that to what is just, what is absolutely essential. Likewise, viral exposure in particular to what's called Simian Virus 40, a virus endemic in Rhesus monkeys. But which has been transmitted to the human population, has also been minimized recently."
