There are three subtypes of mesothelioma and that depends really on how the cancer looks under the microscope. The most common types is called an epithelioid and that's approximately 50 to 60% of all mesothelioma. That has, perhaps, the most benign clinical course and is the most amenable to aggressive treatment such as trimodality treatment with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The least common form would be so-called sarcomatoid mesothelioma, where the cells instead of being round or square, appear elongated, almost like sarcoma cells, another type of aggressive cancer. And in between that, roughly 30% of cases of mesothelioma are so-called mixed or biphasic, where they have elements of both epithelioid cells and sarcomatoid cells.
