Hi, this Yolanda from vanveenbulbs.com. And in this segment I'm going to talk about the female parts of a flower. What are the female parts of a flower? I mean there's so much to learn from botany and you feel like you have to have a degree in horticulture to understand flowers. But the female part of a flower is actually very basic and it's not that different than other animals or plants are not that different than animals. So this is a crocosmia flower and this is a beautiful carmine brilliant, is the name of it. And if you open it up real closely you'll see there's little seeds. And these are the boy parts. The boys have the seeds right here. And then if you look in the middle of all the seeds there's a little tube that comes up and that it the stylus, that is the woman's part right there. That's where the woman's part, that's where she gets pollinated. So the humming birds or other animals will come, or bees actually will get the pollen and as they get the pollen, they drop the pollen on the female part. So as long as that little part gets pollinated, she will produce seeds after the flower dies and those seeds will have the genetic make up of the pollen, the boy part and the girl part. So when they're hybridizing and developing new types of flowers all they do is take the little pollen or the boy part off of a different plant and they'll rub the pollen on to the female part of this variety. So to make new crocosmias they would just mix different boy pollen with girl's little styluses. So it's really quite simple. The female needs to have the male to make new seed pollens and make new plants. But most plants will actually multiply the bulbs asexually too. So the bulb will make more bulblets just like garlic cloves and they don't need a man or a woman for that part. But to make different variances and to make new types of plants, those are actually clones from the bulbs. To make new DNA you just can mix different types of plants in that manner. And it's very simple. And all plants have that basic structure. There's always a female part and a male part and they can pollinate themselves. It's really quite simple.
