Summary: Choose a goat that has a well-structured body with legs set at the corners, a nice foot size, a deep body and easy movements. Decide what quality of goat you want to breed with tips from a livestock consultant in this free video on goat care.
"Tom Boyer, Chalk Creek Boers talking about how to select your goats. Again the real key to this is where do you want to be in the quality scale. Do you want to have the very best goat of your breed? Or do you just want to be in the middle? Or would you rather have commercial goats that are just fun to raise, and goats that are productive, and that you can market the animals commercially from? Once you make that determination, then select a breeder from which you can go and find that level of quality level of breeding stock. It's important that you find animals that have correct structure. No matter what quality you're going for always look for quality structure. Here's a goat where the legs are out on the corners, good top line. Notice how her neck comes out of her shoulders nicely. And she has a beautiful headset to her. She's got good bone, she has a nice size foot, she's carry good condition on her, she's not going to be a hard to keep goat, because she has a good deep body. You'll notice that she moves around, how easily she's able to move. Some animals if their legs are not properly placed, if their shoulders are not laid in correctly. They have difficulty moving around. But these are the kinds of goats that no matter what kind of quality level you want to be at you'll need that kind of structure."
