"Tom Boyer at Chalk Creek Boers, talking about health and disease management in goats. Goats are a difficult species to manage disease in because they're so few of them in the United States compared to other species that not very many drugs have been approved specifically for use in goats. So you need to work closely with a veterinarian, and hopefully you can find a veterinarian who has some skills in...in managing diseases in goats. There are some antibiotics that are approved for use in goats, and, of course, one of the best procedures is to do preventative kinds of things in the way you manage your goats to eliminate the disease in the first place. Some of the things you can do to prevent disease are to keep them in good, fresh, clean environments that are healthy, where they can get a lot of exercise. Where they have a lot of fresh air. And that is probably the number one thing you can do. Another thing you can do is control worms by keeping feed troughs and waterers clean. Put 'em on a quality nutrition program, so that they're capable of fighting off diseases that are everywhere in the atmosphere and on farms, and everyplace goats are. And if they can fight them off, that will be a great preventative measure that'll help you not have to deal with the disease once it gets there."
